On this last day of the year (I still can’t quite believe it!) I thought I’d share a project I did recently. I designed the layout for a cookbook that a client had created of her mother’s recipes.
It took a loooong time. And it was definitely a huge learning experience. While it didn’t turn out perfect I am still happy with the results.

The wonderful thing about having a few days off: having the time to catch up on time with family & friends, getting outdoors for some much needed exercise, enjoying fancy libations… and, of course, spending a little more time in the kitchen.
There was a time, really not so long ago, when I woke up early-ish at least a few times a week to whip up some scones, pancakes, or a frittata....

This aint your grandma’s pie. This is a crostata. Sometimes it also goes by the name ‘galette’. Either way, they are far more rustic-looking and conforming than pie. And this crostata in particular has some very complex flavors.

So I almost didn’t attend the Portland Bazaar yesterday. I couldn’t find anyone to go with me. I knew it was going to get crazy busy. It’s too easy to let those types of excuses get in the way of the things that you really want.

Last night I celebrated the 11th birthday of a very special Little Sister. We made cupcakes, then frosted and sprinkled them.
The frosting was so delicious, that I had to share the recipe.

I made some very different cookies. Very different.
They’re made with black beans. No flour, just beans. And cayenne pepper, so they’re a bit spicy.
But they’ve also got a very generous portion of chocolate.
And dried cherries.
They’re moist and brownie-like. And there’s no refined sugar, so this is one of the healthiest cookies you can make.
